Apple Fritters Recipe
Ingredients:
- For the fritters:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon (plus extra for dusting)
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted butter
- 2 cups apples, peeled, cored, and diced (about 2 medium apples)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup chopped nuts (optional)
- For frying:
- Vegetable oil (for deep frying)
- For the glaze (optional):
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2-3 tablespoons milk or apple cider
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
- Prepare the Apples:
- Peel, core, and dice the apples into small pieces. You can use a combination of sweet and tart apples for added flavor.
- Mix Dry Ingredients:
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon.
- Mix Wet Ingredients:
- In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, oil (or melted butter), and vanilla extract.
- Combine Mixtures:
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Fold in the diced apples and nuts (if using) gently until evenly distributed.
- Heat Oil:
- In a deep skillet or pot, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test if the oil is hot enough by dropping a small piece of batter into the oil; it should sizzle and rise to the surface.
- Fry the Fritters:
- Using a spoon or a small ice cream scoop, drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil. Fry a few fritters at a time, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown.
- Use a slotted spoon to remove the fritters and drain them on paper towels.
- Make the Glaze (optional):
- In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk (or apple cider), and vanilla extract until smooth. Adjust the consistency by adding more milk if it’s too thick or more powdered sugar if it’s too thin.
- Serve:
- Once the fritters are slightly cooled, you can drizzle the glaze over them or dust them with powdered sugar and a sprinkle of cinnamon. Serve warm.
Tips:
- Apples: Use a mix of tart and sweet apples like Granny Smith and Honeycrisp for a better flavor contrast.
- Storage: Apple fritters are best eaten fresh, but they can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Reheat in an oven to regain some crispness.
- Customization: Feel free to add spices (like nutmeg) or mix in other ingredients (like raisins or cranberries) for added flavor!
Enjoy your homemade apple fritters! They are sure to be a hit!
