CABBAGE ROLLS IN TOMATO SAUCE
Stuffed cabbage rolls are a comforting, hearty dish enjoyed in many cultures around the world. From Eastern Europe to the Middle East, variations of this recipe bring warmth to the table with tender cabbage leaves, a flavorful filling, and a tangy tomato sauce.
This recipe is easy to prepare, filling, and absolutely delicious! Perfect for family dinners or when you’re craving a cozy homemade meal.
INGREDIENTS
For the cabbage rolls:
- 1 large head of cabbage
- 500 g (1 lb) ground beef or pork (or a mix)
- 1 cup cooked rice
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp paprika
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
For the tomato sauce:
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cups tomato sauce (or crushed tomatoes)
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tsp sugar
- ½ tsp paprika
- 1 tsp dried oregano or thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
INSTRUCTIONS
- Prepare the cabbage:
- Bring a large pot of water to boil.
- Remove the core of the cabbage and carefully place it into boiling water.
- Boil for 5–7 minutes until leaves loosen. Remove and let cool slightly. Separate leaves.
- Make the filling:
- In a large bowl, combine ground meat, cooked rice, chopped onion, garlic, egg, parsley, paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
- Assemble rolls:
- Place 2 tablespoons of filling onto a cabbage leaf.
- Fold sides and roll tightly, tucking in ends to secure. Repeat with remaining leaves and filling.
- Cook the sauce:
- In a pot, heat olive oil and sauté onion and garlic until soft.
- Add tomato paste, tomato sauce, sugar, herbs, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes.
- Cook the rolls:
- Place cabbage rolls seam-side down in a large pot or baking dish.
- Pour the sauce over the rolls, covering them completely.
- Simmer on low heat for 45–60 minutes on the stove, or bake covered at 180°C (350°F) for 1 hour.
SERVING SUGGESTIONS
- Serve hot with fresh bread, mashed potatoes, or sour cream.
- Garnish with fresh parsley for a burst of color and freshness.
