CopyCat Long John Silver’s Chicken

Ingredients:

For the Chicken:

  • 4-6 pieces of chicken (legs, thighs, breasts, or a mix)
  • 1 cup of buttermilk (or milk mixed with 1 tablespoon of vinegar)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Batter:

  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup of cornmeal (this gives the chicken its signature texture)
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon of paprika (or to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper

For Frying:

  • Vegetable oil (or your preferred frying oil)

Instructions:

  1. Marinate the Chicken:
  • In a large bowl, soak the chicken pieces in buttermilk, seasoning it generously with salt and pepper. Let it marinate in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour (or overnight for more flavor).
  1. Prepare the Batter:
  • In a separate bowl, combine the flour, cornmeal, baking powder, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper. Whisk until well combined.
  1. Heat the Oil:
  • In a deep skillet or fryer, heat about 1-2 inches of vegetable oil over medium heat (about 350°F or 175°C). You can test if the oil is ready by dropping a small amount of batter into the oil; it should sizzle.
  1. Coat the Chicken:
  • Remove the chicken from the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off. Dredge each piece in the flour mixture, coating it evenly. Shake off any excess flour.
  1. Fry the Chicken:
  • Carefully place the coated chicken pieces into the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 8-12 minutes, turning occasionally, until the chicken is golden brown and cooked through. (Internal temperature should reach 165°F or 75°C).
  1. Drain and Serve:
  • Once cooked, transfer the chicken to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  1. Enjoy:
  • Serve your homemade Long John Silver’s-style chicken with your favorite sides, such as coleslaw, hushpuppies, or fries!

Tips:

  • Seasoning: Feel free to adjust the spices in the batter to suit your taste. Adding cayenne pepper can give it a spicy kick.
  • Double Frying: For an extra crispy texture, you can fry the chicken twice—once to cook it through, and again after letting it sit for a few minutes.

This recipe is an excellent way to get that iconic Long John Silver’s flavor at home! Enjoy your crispy chicken! 🍗✨
