Messy Chef Bread Casserole
Ingredients:
- 6-8 cups of bread (cubed, any kind—white, whole wheat, sourdough, or a mix)
- 6 large eggs
- 2 cups milk (or half-and-half for a richer dish)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper (to taste)
- 1-2 cups of cheese (shredded; cheddar, mozzarella, or your favorite)
- 1-2 cups of desired mix-ins:
- Cooked sausage or bacon (crumbled)
- Vegetables (like bell peppers, onions, spinach, or mushrooms)
- Fresh herbs (like parsley or chives)
- Sun-dried tomatoes
- Any leftover meats (like ham or turkey)
- Optional toppings: Additional cheese, breadcrumbs, or herbs
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Prepare the bread: In a large bowl, combine the cubed bread with your chosen mix-ins (meats, veggies, etc.).
- Make the egg mixture: In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper until well combined.
- Combine: Pour the egg mixture over the bread mixture, making sure all the bread cubes are soaked. If the mixture seems dry, you can add a bit more milk.
- Add cheese: Add the shredded cheese to the mixture, stirring gently to combine.
- Transfer to baking dish: Grease a large baking dish (about 9×13 inches) and pour the mixture into the dish, spreading it evenly.
- Optional toppings: If desired, sprinkle additional cheese or breadcrumbs on top for a crunchy texture.
- Bake: Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the egg is set.
- Cool and serve: Allow the casserole to cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired.
- Enjoy: Serve warm and enjoy your Messy Chef Bread Casserole!
Tips:
- This dish is perfect for using up leftover bread or ingredients. Feel free to get creative with your mix-ins based on what you have on hand.
- You can prepare this casserole the night before, just refrigerate it before baking. If doing so, add a few extra minutes to the baking time.
Enjoy this delicious and hearty dish for brunch or any gathering!
