Smothered Style Pork Chops Recipe
Ingredients:
- 4 bone-in or boneless pork chops (about 1 inch thick)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup chicken broth (or beef broth)
- 1 cup heavy cream (or milk for a lighter version)
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (optional)
- Fresh herbs (like thyme or parsley) for garnish
Instructions:
- Prepare the Pork Chops:
- Season both sides of the pork chops with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
- Sear the Pork Chops:
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat.
- Add the pork chops and sear for about 4-5 minutes per side until they are browned. They do not have to be cooked all the way through at this point.
- Remove the chops from the skillet and set aside.
- Cook the Onions:
- In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and cook until they are softened, about 5 minutes. If using, add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
- Make the Gravy:
- Pour in the chicken broth, scraping the bottom of the skillet to release any browned bits (this adds flavor).
- Stir in the heavy cream, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard (if using). Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
- Smother the Pork Chops:
- Return the pork chops to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and let everything simmer for about 15-20 minutes, or until the pork chops are cooked through (internal temperature should reach 145°F/63°C) and tender.
- Serve:
- Remove from heat and let it sit for a couple of minutes before serving.
- Garnish with fresh herbs if desired. Serve the smothered pork chops with the gravy over mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite side dish.
Tips:
- You can add mushrooms or bell peppers along with the onions for extra flavor and texture.
- For a spicier kick, consider adding some Cajun seasoning or a pinch of cayenne pepper when seasoning the pork chops.
- Letting the pork chops rest for a minute after cooking will help retain their juices.
Enjoy your delicious smother-style pork chops!
